Adri is 2 months past four and she is still not all yet familiar with her alphabet. The last I quizzed her with an alphabet jigsaw (last week), she recognised 18 out of the 26 letters.
I grew a tad anxious that Adri is still not reading at 4. Asked around and a few sets of key readers surfaced - Jane and Peter, Joy Carley readers, leapfrog, zoophonics etc.
I decided to start Adri on some sight words.
It took me a few days of browsing on the internet before i decided to get the Jane and Peter series. Prior to purchasing the books, I was rather apprehensive and wondered if Adri would appreciate such classics given that she's very used to books with contemporary prints/pictures. Nevertheless, the positive appraisals gathered both from colleagues and from like-minded online shoppers totally shoved my apprehensive aside and I decided to give it a shot.
Started book 1a with Adri earlier. Read the book with her and upon the second reading, Adri was already able to read a few words correctly. I'm not sure if that was sheer luck (ie correct guessing), pure memory, accurate prediction or if she did know some sight words. Whichever the case, I'm happy that Adri did enjoy the book and she did persevere through the 50 pages. She was totally with me and totally didn't mind the length all throughout the 3 readings!
Well done, Adri! Mummy is proud of you. :)
